Review: Planivaar - The Green Boat

Last year Mark Lippett released Planivaar’s ‘The Yellow Square’, a quiet little album based on synth, guitar and a selection of odd samples. It possessed an almost childlike innocence in its chiming textures and toy instruments. ‘The Green Boat’ makes a move towards the macabre with its five tracks actually forming one contiunous piece of music.

‘A Is For Apple’ begins in unassuming fashion but soon the charming wind chimes are replaced by the warped mysterious melodies of ‘Brave Lion’; the layered electronica approach reminding me of Mole Harness. ‘Marvin’ is gentler again, its primtive noises sounding like a remnants from an old computer game. Then on the lengthy final segment, ‘Adrift’, the instrumentation settles into a peaceful drone, accompanied by dripping water and unidentified chatter. The whole EP conveys to me a child’s journey into a mysterious deep sea voyage where fantastic creatures can be discovered yet the often darker undertones of the music reveals danger lurks in its murky depths.
