What cool, engaging release – but for the reasons most albums hit me well ‘n good! This one is not a rocker, not particularly sprightly and light-in-the-toes, but it has a hypnotic quality that pulls you in. Dave Milligan is not playing it safe with his pop inspirations with his healthy love of early Squeeze, Nick Lowe and Martin Newell, it’s a distinctively British take on pop craftmenship but it works extremely well on “See Thru Songs”.

I myself just posted a review of this album today, and what’s amazing is how similar our angles are on the CD. I also note an obvious and wide array of influences, but somehow Elika manage to weave it all together into something uniquely theirs–it’s a strange and impressive feat. Pretty good stuff–both the album and your review.

I really liked this record, it wasn’t just shoegaze by numbers and there appeared to be a bit of thought put into chord progressions etc. The vocals suit the music to say, kind of hazy, yet forceful in their own way. Add to that the fact there are some MEGA tunes on there and it’s a thorughly enjoyable listen — although I can’t compare to their earlier recordings.

i played this for the first time at the weekend… the second song is SO like Cocteau Twins… i always get the comparisons but this deserves them… good album tho

We listen to this album a lot in my painting class at the local college. My students love to paint with this in the background and hear something new every time.

Many thanks for the review, Jon. Just to let any interested readers know, the release of this EP has sadly been delayed because the sleeves have gone missing in the post. Anyone interested in buying a copy should keep their eye on the Make Mine Music website and we’ll make an announcement as soon as we can about a definite release date. In the meantime, tracks can be previewed on The Doldrums’ MySpace page.

The forthcoming Doldrums’ full-length, as I understand it, will have totally different tracks to this sampler. Some of the tracks on “Mirth and Songs” are taken from a CD album that came out in the USA last year, whilst some were recorded exclusively for this EP.
