Review: Ghost Puncher – I Hear Voices

Ghost Puncher AKA Los Angeles resident Tom Bass has presented an interesting and varied set of glitch-pop for his new ‘I Hear Voices’ EP. He’s apparently been “making waves” in the IDM community and even if there’s nothing particularly original here, he can certainly cause a few positive ripples.

Whereas the glitchy randomness of ‘Mirror Step’ and ‘Invisible Children’ emulates the more difficult end of the Warp Records’ roster, other tracks are far more focussed on melody and structure. Despite its unappealing title, ‘Shitty Situation’ is an accomplished stab at folktronica whereas ‘Chords’ marries house piano with R&B vocals and crunchy beats.

Whilst it’s easy to applaud the diversity Bass demonstrates here, there’s almost too much going on to be truly appreciated. However, the tuneful moments are well worth hearing and promise much for future releases.
