Review: Hong Kong In The 60s – Collision/Detection v4

We are now on the fourth edition of the Long Division With Remainders’ experimental audio series. Hong Kong In The 60s represent the most accessible side yet in the project, as one might expect from an electronic pop trio from London and Cambridge.

Not that this is particularly apparent from the beginning of ‘The Ungrateful Root’; a song which builds from an evil drone to a space rock epic, complete with baroque organ melody. ‘Into The Forest Of Eyes’ is, apparently, “the next instalment in the band’s ongoing Mouse Opera”. Thanks to its grand, nostalgic tone, however, it feels more like a lost track from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop archives. Next up is ‘Banbury Grove’, where an inspired vocal from Mei Yau Kan and crystalline keyboards recall the cinematic magic of the much-missed Broadcast. This just leaves ‘The Clearing’, which is like hearing the vocal techniques in 10cc’s ‘I’m Not In Love’ set to a childrens’ TV theme.

There’s enough invention and imagination in these four tracks to power an album, let alone less than fifteen minutes. Hong Kong In The 60s pull off that rare trick of using vintage equipment and samples whilst still making them sound ethereal and futuristic.
